Copper mine musuem in Jochberg Bonuspartner lt. Gästekarte | trade & services
This old mine is situated on the Pass Thurn Bundesstraße B 161, 10 km (6 1/4 miles) south of Kitzbühel. Jochberg was first mentioned as a mining village in 1447. By 1830 there were 16 km (10 miles) of working galleries and 2 km (1 mile) of shafts on various levels. In its heyday, the mine employed 160 men over 30 km (18 3/4 miles) and 134 tons of copper ore were extracted every year. Until 1874 the ore was also smelted in Jochberg. The last shift was run on 31st July 1926 when the "Kupferplatte" finally closed down. In 1990, the old gallery was made into the "Kupferplatte" mining museum, where visitors can descend 500 m by pit railway.
