Road Bicycle Racing
In the past few years, there has been a significant increase in tourists and locals embracing the sport of road bicycle racing. A major boost to this local development has been the huge popularity of triathlon events (Triathlon World Championship Series) as well as the mountain stages of the Austria Cycling Tour at Kitzbüheler Horn. An increasing number of recreational cyclists are following the call of mythical Kitzbüheler Horn mountain, home to Austria's steepest cycling paths. Kitzbühel is starting into the 2011 season with newly chosen road racing courses covering 1,200 kilometres.
Kitzbühel has a long tradition of road bicycle racing. The cycling races to Kitzbüheler Horn mountain, established in 1971, as well as the Austria Cycling Tour, which have stopped here since its early years, are testimony to this tradition.
Since the turn of the new millennium, biking enthusiasts all over the Alps have increasingly turned to road racing. Overall, there has been a significant increase in tourists and locals embracing the sport of road bicycle racing. In Kitzbühel, it was especially the triathlon boom (Triathlon World Championship Series, the X-Terra Tyrol Cross Triathlon, the mountain stages of the Austria Cycling Tour at Kitzbüheler Horn mountain and the start of the Germany Tour 2008) that has given an important boost to the bike racing trend.
