Cycling Races
For many decades, Kitzbühel has ranked among the most attractive venues for cycling races. Among other major international cycling events, Kitzbühel hosted the start of the Germany Tour 2008 as well as the annual mountain stage of the Austria Cycling Tour.
For many decades, Kitzbühel has ranked among the most attractive venues for cycling races. In 1971, the Kitzbüheler Horn Mountain Race was held for the first time. International cycling champions, including the superstar of the Tour de France, Lucien van Impe (BEL), have sought the extreme endurance test of the Kitzbühel mountains. However, the successful series of races back in the 70s and 80s merely marked the beginning of Kitzbühel's impressive evolvement into a cycling mecca.
Established in 1996, the mountain biking festival KitzAlpBike has made a name for itself as one of the sport's major events.
Since 2000, the most challenging stage of the annual Austria Cycling Tour has been taking place in Kitzbühel. Given its difficulty level and the large turnout of fans, the mountain stage leading to Alpenhaus is known as Austria's "Alpe d'Huez." Kitzbüheler Horn mountain is home to Austria's steepest cycling trails.
Major international cycling events, such as the start of the renowned Germany Tour 2008 and races held on the occasion of the Triathlon World Championship Series, contribute to Kitzbühel's status as a coveted host city of international cycling events.
