68th Kitzbühel tennis tournament BET-AT-HOME CUP 2012
Kitzbühel and tennis – a classic combination. International tennis tournaments have been held in Kitzbühel for 68 years now. In summer 2012, top tennis aces will be meeting from 22nd July - 28th July for the BET-AT-HOME Cup, which will be a part of the ATP 250-Series.The legendary Kitzbühel tennis tournament is thus all set to take place in 2012. On July 22, 2012, the centre court in the Tyrol Unterland region will become the venue for the elite ball game. The ATP 250-Series will bring many Tennis stars to Kitzbühel.
Kitzbühel Tennis Club, under President Herbert Günther, received the tender from the ATP, and so the tournament returns to Kitzbühel after an absence of many years. Peter Marko, Director of Kitzbühel Tourismus, emphasises the importance of the tournament for the region: "It's very important that the tradition of tennis in Kitzbühel is carried on. These competitions have been held for 68 years, and that's unique in the Alpine region. With the tennis tournament and the Hansi Hinterseer Fan-Week, the city of sport, hosting in August two top-level events!"
There's a long history to tennis in Kitzbühel. English visitors brought the elite "white game" to the little Alpine town as early as the 19th century. The first tennis competition took place in 1889. The present competition series has been taking place since 1945, undergoing several name changes over the course of time (as the Alpenland Cup, Head Cup, Generali Open, and now the Austrian Open). The competition's highlights so far have included champions like Thomas Muster, Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic in the 1990s.
