35th Int. Kitzbueheler Horn Mountain RunAug 25, 2013 :: On Sunday, the 25th August 2013 is the 35th International Kitzbuehel Horn mountain run. To get to the summit at 1,996 m, athletes have to deal with 1,234 vertical meters and gradients of up to 20%. The course record from the city center to the TV station has been continuously improved. From Peter Heron (GER) in the first run in 1979 (1:04:12 h) up to the mountain running legend Jonathan Wyatt "the best mountain runner of all time" from New Zealnd, ran in 2000, the approximate time of 55:58 minutes. 2001 another New Zealander Melissa Moon reached the summit in 1:07:31. Running the Horn in 2009, the 25th race, Kenyan Geoffrey Ndungu made it in 58.20 min. in finishing in front of two of his countrymen. The women’s race was won by experienced Carina Lilge-Leutner-AUT 1:14:33h
For more than three decades it was considered too difficult, even impossible, to run a foot race competition up the Kitzbuehel Horn. Franz Puckl and his colleagues watched and mingled with the participants of the Kitzbuehel Horn mountain bike race in 1978. He could see some of the runners were able to compete well with the cyclists and 1979, a year later they had the first run. 273 participants were at the premiere. As a result, this established the race. In the 90s, the number of participants grew in part on 600 runners.
