Krone Kitz Horn Challenge

Jul 10, 2015 :: Are you are a keen amateur cyclist and want to conquer the steepest Mountain Cycle ride Austria under the same conditions as the professionals? Then you are at the right place at the Krone Kitzhorn Challenge. This bike race is held annually on the Kitzbühel Horn and starts just a few hours before the professionals reach the summit at the "horn". 900 people make the top of the Kitzhorn Challenge, one of the largest mountain bike races in Austria.

The ascent to the Alpenhaus is the steepest of its kind in Austria and is considered to be one of the toughest tests in the international professional cycling. For this superlative ensures the continuous extreme gradients of up to 22.3% coupled with the sun-exposed location. And although the scenic road from the timing system at Högler farmers to Alpenhaus, track length (7.1 km) and height difference (865 m), is slightly lower than many of the famous Tour de France-sized mountains, mastering the road to the summit of the Kitzbühel Horn (2000 m), the difficulties probably put all similar roads in the Alps in the shade.

Get a seat at the "crown Kitz Horn Challenge" and be there when set off around midday 900 with amateur cyclists from the centre of Kitzbühel. Jointly cope with the 18 hairpin bends to the Alpine House and in the same professional environment such as professional riders.

The date of the "Krone Kitzhorn Challenge" is timed to be on the date of the Kitzbühel Horn stage in the Tour of Austria.

The legend of the Kitzbühel Horn cycling event was started by the Int. Mountain bike race from 1971 to 1995 ("Big Mountain Prize of Europe") where professionals and amateurs cycled from the city centre to the Alpine House. The horn was regarded at that time as the most difficult mountain test in Europe. Champions such as Lucien van Impe (NL), Beat Breu (SUI), Wolfgang Stein Mayr (AUT) and Rudolf Mitteregger (AUT) wrote messages in the winners' list. After a few years break the series was re-introduced in 2006.

The course record from Högler-Bauern to the Alpenhaus (1,666 m) is held by the Austrian youngster Thomas Rohregger. On 10 July 2007, he stormed in the Tour of Austria in 28:24 minutes to the Alpenhaus. For recreational cyclists it would take, on average between 40 and 50 minutes and be thought of as excellent.
