2014 Kitzbuehel Triathlon European ChampionshipsJun 19, 2014 :: From 19 to 22 June 2014, the Triathlon European Championships will be hosted by Austria for the third time in its history and for the first time will be coming to Kitzbühel, the legendary city of sport in the Alps.
From 19 to 22 June 2014, the European Championships will be attracting triathlon professionals from across Europe but the championships are also a unique mass sporting event. More than 2,000 athletes from 35 ETU member countries are expected to come to Kitzbühel for the event and with their friends and family, this will result in some 15,000 overnight stays spent in Kitzbühel. After 5 years as part of the World Championship series with its highlight on the Kitzbüheler Horn, triathlon is now returning to its original arena in and around the Schwarzsee lake and Kitzbühel town centre as part of the European Championships 2014.
In addition to the European Championships for different age categories, an Elite and Junior European Champion will also be named. There will also be Elite and Junior team competitions and some 100 disabled athletes who will battle it out for a European Championship medal in different age categories. The Paratriathlon will form part of the Paralympics programme for the first time in Rio in 2016.
“A great logistical challenge awaits and the whole team are really looking forward to it. We are trying to combine elite and mass sport with the friendly charm of Austria and Tyrol and to organise an unforgettable event for our athletes and their support teamsw,” says Events Manager Herwig Grabner about the new challenge.
“There were some 1,400 athletes in Alanya/ Turkey this year and so we are expecting more than 2,000 athletes in the coming year including all the supporting competitions,” says President of the Austrian Triathlon Association, Walter Zettinig and Tyrol’s Association President Julius Skamen, setting their sights high.
“We are looking forward to this big event and expect it to bring added tourism value too,” says Kitzbühel Tourism President Signe Reisch of the provisional changeover from the World Championship series to the European Championships.
