The best ski resort in the world 2013

Kitzbuehel is one of the most popular ski resorts worldwide. Famous for having the “Streif”, the most difficult ski run in the world, the mountains of the Kitzbuehel Alps are suited to all types of skiing. The combination of 170 kilometres of groomed, marked and prepared pistes, plus 32 kilometres of ski routes, means that winter sports enthusiasts can ski until their body begs them to take a break in one of the traditional Tyrolean mountain huts and restaurants. 60 groomed ski runs of varying difficulty are shown on the Kitzbuehel ski area map. Of the 170 kilometres available, 69 kilometres are classified as easy (blue), 77 kilometres are classified as intermediate (red) and 24 kilometres are classified as difficult (black). There are also 32 kilometres of ski routes that are marked and monitored but the snow is not groomed and prepared. These runs typically consist of deep snow or moguls and are protected against the danger of an avalanche.

Snow

The winter season in Kitzbuehel is long and has regular and consistent snow. This is due to its northerly position and steady flow of moist air from the North Sea, resulting in a prolonged snowfall and large amounts of fresh snow. The intra-Alpine and easy continental climate is due to significantly lower temperatures than in the French and Swiss Alps.

Austrian Ski Team trains in Kitzbuehel

Many of the stars of Austrian skiing come to Kitzbuehel to refine their form in short training camps. At the beginning of the season, the snow sure Resterkogel in Pass Thurn is an ideal location. The Ganslernhang, where the Hahnenkamm slalom race is held, is repeatedly used by various teams for slalom training throughout the season.
