The Ganslern is one of the last classic slalom slopes that remains on the World Cup circuit. For decades, the world's top slalom racers have engaged in battle here, fighting for glory. Try it out for yourself and take a ride on the Ganslernhang or alternatively, watch the youngsters of the Kitzbueheler Ski Club in training and spot a potential star of tomorrow.
With its varied terrain, the racecourse is impressive. Numerous bumps, rollers and cambers make it incredibly difficult to find the correct rhythm. The racers have to adapt to the changing conditions within seconds. Reduce speed, full speed, change direction and attack .The combination of gates at the final part of the course are even more challenging when, with the roar of the crowd behind them, the racers are urged on to take further risks in a bid for glory. The atmosphere in the finish area is truly electrifying.
Skiing the course
The Ganslern is a groomed marked and prepared piste that can be sampled by all skiers. The starting point is at the upper exit of the Ganslern lift (marked, “A2”on the Kitzbuehel ski map) or from the lower part of the Family Streif.
There are times when it is necessary to close the Ganslernhang and during the build up to the Hahnenkamm races, the Ganslern is closed. Work is required to prepare the course for the race. If required, snow must be transported to the right places and the terrain has to be corrected if necessary. The entire track is then prepared, frozen and solidified. Safety and security fencing is erected, provisions for television coverage are also put in place, along with a public address system and other related work to allow the race to take place.
The Ganslern takes its name from the river Gaensbach that flows nearby. The name is also used by the farm, “Ganslern” built in 1993.
