My perfect skiing day!

Sun and snow as far as the eye can see: that’s the way to begin a perfect skiing day! Let me tell you about the wonderful time I had with my friends recently when they spent the day here with me at the Kitzbühel ski area.

Perfect morning!

Breakfast on the mountain

We were able to make an early start by enjoying breakfast on the mountain. After all, there’s something special about being the very first group of the day to hit the powder snow slopes!

Ready for a perfect skiing day

We made our ascent on the awe-inspiring Fleckalmbahn cable car. This is decorated with the flags of the world, just as it was at its grand opening 33 years ago – an event I still have fond memories of today. If you’d like to learn more, I recently found a page chronicling the history of Bergbahn AG Kitzbühel.

Pristine powder snow

As the first skiers on the mountain, we were rewarded for our early start with a truly stunning view of the sunrise over the peaks! After buckling up our skis, we headed out onto what felt like a carpet of pristine powder snow. It seemed as though we had the whole piste to ourselves as we carved our way across the untouched slopes.

Jufen – Silberstube – Kasereck

We then made our way to the wonderful new Jufen lift, settling into the soft, warm seats as we made the short journey to the summit. And when we reached the top, it was bathed in glorious sunshine!

I was thrilled to return to the “Kasereck” and the “Silberstube”, which are two of my favourite slopes. With precious few skiers around apart from us, we decided to save our morning coffee break for later – and get down to some serious skiing!

Over 50 kilometres of slopes

After covering what FELT like 50 kilometres of slopes, we’d all built up quite an appetite. As the sun continued to beat down, we were also very glad to have remembered our sun cream!

We made our way to our favourite mountain inn, hoping that we would still be early enough to enjoy the world-famous homemade cream-filled pastries on offer. After tucking into hearty Kasspatzl cheese spaetzle and fluffy sweet shredded pancakes, we made our way down to the Steinbergkogel lift. Returning to the slopes on a full stomach, we thought it best to ski at a more gentle pace…

Heading down the Direttissima

The Direttissima (black ski run) is a natural part of a perfect skiing day, boasting a slope that’s a real thrill ride. As I felt the burn in my thighs, I found myself resolving to hit the gym more often this year! Looking to take a quick breather on one of the longer lifts, we headed up to the Ehrenbachhöhe and down the Ochsalm where we stopped for coffee at the mountain inn located right alongside the slope.

A coffee break on top of the world!

Our coffee was served up with an enthralling view of the Großer Rettenstein mountain, which rises majestically above the surrounding peaks. We then embarked on a steep ascent to the Ehrenbachhöhe, once again making our way in the direction of Jufen. The group pushed steadily on, taking in an exhilarating sunset on the Streif family run as we headed back down into the valley.

Finally, after returning from a thrilling time out on the slopes, we took off our ski boots and enjoyed a relaxing evening together  I’d call that a perfect skiing day!
