Part 1 - Joseph Salvenmoser - from fire to glass into the air

Fire and air

Exactly these two elements play a decisive role in the life of Joseph "Seppi" Salvenmoser from Kitzbühel. Immerse yourself in the world of an exceptional artist and follow his exciting career.

Known worldwide

When Joseph is not flying his "kite" around the world, he is at home in his small, fine workshop producing artistic glassware. Which are well known around the globe.

Fire and glass

This article is specifically about fire and glass. In the second part of our story, we will report on another of Seppi's passions, and this one mainly takes place in the air. We are curious.

Glass - easily breakable

For over 30 years, Joseph Salvenmoser has designed and produced every single glass himself. It all started with his training at the glass school in Kramsach as a glass apparatus blower. A few years ago very sought-after professionals, not for nothing his professional career led him to Munich in the 80s.

The biggest waves are in Hawaii

At the age of 14 Joseph discovered his passion for windsurfing, he spent every free minute with his friends at the Schwarzsee and at the Achensee. If the pocket money was enough, the group was sometimes on the way to Lake Garda. Already at the age of 16 he made it to the Tyrolean champion and the youth state champion in windsurfing. Great achievement considering that Kitzbühel is not exactly known for windsurfing.

His hobby led Seppi to Hawaii by chance in 1986. There, where the biggest waves and the BEST windsurfers are to be found. After 2 years the island was too small or was it homesickness for the mountains?

Irreplaceable mountain landscape

Back home, at a family party in the then exclusive "Unterbergerstuben" gourmet restaurant in Kitzbühel, Seppi noticed the less than creative schnapps glasses. Drinking expensive schnapps from less than beautiful glasses gave him the idea to create glasses himself. Thus, the famous Joseph S. glasses were created which are only genuine with his signature.

Colorful, playful and creative

The rush was and is great on his sometimes very unconventional creations. Seppi was able to accept many prizes for his works of art in the 1990s, such as the State Prize for Creative Craftsmanship in 1990. Colorful and playful artworks changed in 2000 to simple and simpler creations, although Joseph prefers it colorful and playful. Seppi does not need to worry about marketing. The Rochelt company has had its own collection since 1988, and right now new shot glasses are being added. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also a fan of Seppi's glasses, as he told us.

Each glass is unique

On request, glasses of all shapes and sizes are made with the very personal touch. For a shot glass Joseph needs up to 45 minutes, depending on the shape and color. Each glass is mouth-blown, is made without a mold and is signed Joseph S.. An absolutely unique piece, like the artist himself.
