Tristkogel Challenge – uphill and downhill but never alone!

The Tristkogel Challenge since 2001

The Challenge was organized for the first time in 2001 by Georg Überall. A combination of mountain biking, mountain running and orientation, which must be completed in teams of two. As a result, it is not the specialists of the individual disciplines who call the shots, but that alpine experience is essential for success.

The disciplines reflect those summer sports for which the Kitzbühel Alps are predestined. The southern mountains of Kitzbühel with forests and alpine meadows are crisscrossed by a tight network of paths, trails and climbs and offer ideal, varied possibilities for course selection. The team presentation, the prologue and the start in the historic Kitzbühel town center not only give the event a very special atmosphere, but also attract many spectators to the competition in the Gamsstadt.

Ambitious amateur athletes and professionals are on the move over the distance of about 2,000 meters in altitude. It is precisely this mixture of professional athletes, such as David Kreiner, Benjamin Karl, Klaus Kröll, Jörg Jaksche, Gerrit Glomser and the local elite, that gives the Tristkogel Challenge its special flair. Especially the success and the popularity of the event are based on the professional handling and the personal atmosphere at the race.

All employees of the Tristkogel Challenge are volunteers, i.e. on the day of the race around the OC team 130 employees are working for free. The entire proceeds of the event go to children's aid projects or to needy or distressed people in the immediate vicinity.

Georg Überall

So now to the thoughts of the inventor, Georg Überall, the Tristkogel Challenge, which now already takes place this year for the 11th time (every 2nd year). Together with Joe Berger, we are pleased that you have found time to answer a few questions. But now quick!

Georg, how did the Tristkogel Challenge come about? - The association "Sport und Kultur Kitzbühel" was founded in 2002 - with the aim of organizing extraordinary sporting and cultural events and using the (eventual) financial profit to support social projects and promote work with children and young people in various sporting disciplines.

Can you tell us something about the weatherproof paper (orientation plan for the participants)? - The story is quickly told. The map is printed on plastic-based waterproof "paper".

It was important for you that the event is "sustainable", what are the individual points? - A sporting event in alpine terrain is inevitably associated with stress for the animal and plant world and brings exhaust fumes, noise and waste with it. For this reason it is important for us to sensitize the staff, participants and spectators without putting too much emphasis on the topic of "sustainability and nature conservation". In the area of the transition zone and finish line, for example, only reusable containers and compostable tableware will be handed out and a waste separation system will be introduced. If everyone uses their common sense and makes an effort, the traces we inevitably leave behind won't be too big.

Many professional sportsmen and women are also involved time and again? What do you think is the special attraction for the athletes to participate? - The special thing about the Tristkogel Challenge is that physical fitness alone is not enough to be at the top. Due to the orientation in the terrain and the necessity to perform as a team, the course of the event cannot be foreseen or planned by the participants. This uncertainty is certainly part of the appeal of the event. In addition, this race format always has ambitious amateur athletes at the front, which is why, despite the participation of professional athletes, there are always many locals at the start.

Kitzbühel Altstadt

2005 the Tristkogel Challenge was held annually. However, this interval means that after cleaning up the previous event, planning and preparations for the next year must already begin. This continuous "having to" inevitably leads to signs of wear and tear, which is why the event has also taken a five-year break. The two-year interval introduced in 2010 means that we as organizers are always refreshed and highly motivated to tackle the next Challenge. It has also been shown that by many athletes who prepare intensively for this one competition, this break is received just as positively.

A special race in Kitzbühel takes place before the actual Challenge on the mountains, what is this all about? - On the evening before the "actual" Challenge, an orienteering race will take place in the city center, where the participants will compete for the starting positions for Saturday. The basic idea for this prologue was to spread out the field of participants before the actual start so that not all participants are in one big group and each team has to choose its route independently. In the meantime, this crowd-pulling prelude to the Tristkogel Challenge in the middle of Kitzbühel's old town has become a fixed part of the event.

Radfahrer am Trail

Only 2 people know the distance to be covered, even already tested? - The altitude meters and the distance are not the difficulty of the Tristkogel Challenge, it is rather about making the right decisions in a race situation. You can't simulate this experience, you can only experience it on day -X during the race. I (Joe) was a participant in the early years of the event and Georg will be at the start of the 11th Tristkogel Challenge again this year. Then only one knows the course.

For the Tristkogel Challenge a certain basic condition is necessary, what would you suggest for a sensible training and above all when to start with it in time? - Just as the characters of the participants are very different, the optimal training has to be adapted to the body of each athlete individually. Basically, however, it can be said that a certain level of basic endurance is required for this competition, which can only be obtained by training over a longer period of time and by collecting altitude meters. Waiting until the trails are snow-free in the spring and then completing a few mountain bike units at race pace is certainly not enough.

This year's transition area on the mountain has changed, but you can already reveal that? - Yes, we may. The transition area will be at the Auracher Wildalm.

What is the best way to relax after the Tristkogel Challenge? - The best way to relax after the race is to regain the free time we don't really have in the weeks before the Challenge. Above all, the head is free again and you can think of other things or simply nothing at all. The "time afterwards" is certainly also a relaxation for those around us, since they can talk to us about other or "normal" things again.

We wish everyone much success and above all an accident-free Tristkogel Challenge on 5th and 6th of june 2020
