Tiroler Nussöl World Triathlon Kitzbühel

Jul 5, 2013 :: July 5th-7th, 2013: The Kitzbuehel round of the ITU World Triathlon Series for 2013 takes place between July 5th – 7th and aims to make history with a spectacular route, creating a new chapter in Triathlon World Cup history. This year, the Kitzbueheler Horn, the mountain with the steepest road in Austria, lies in waiting. For the first time, a World Cup triathlon will be decided by a mountain top finish.

Having completed the opening one kilometre swim across the Schwarzsee, the triathletes begin the 11.5 kilometre bike course in earnest. The course travels through the old medieval centre of Kitzbuehel and then up along the panoramic road on the Kitzbueheler Horn.
The final seven kilometres of the bike course take place at an altitude above 800 metres. The triathletes will have to manage the demands placed on their bodies as they make their way up the mountain, with the road becoming increasingly steeper short before arrival at the second transition area. The last 500 metres before changing over from the bike to the run are the steepest part of the Kitzbueheler Horn where the road has a maximum gradient of 22.3%!
This will leave the competitors with a final three km run. The finish line outside the Alpenhaus at 1670m altitude is where the triathletes will be welcomed home to a fully deserved and rapturous round of applause. This is one of the best vantage points for the spectators to watch the race and our tip is to use the “Hornbahn” cable car to get there.
Every year the ITU World Triathlon attracts licensed professional and amateur triathletes from all over the world. Kitzbuehel has established itself as a firm favourite among the professional athletes enjoying one of the best reputations, despite competition from international cities such as London, Sydney and Tokyo that have hosted the Olympic Games. The rolling hills of Kitzbuehel, a well organised infrastructure and its neat hotel business offer a unique ambiance.
The Men’s and Women’s competitions will be broadcast live, bringing the most attractive triathlon, that has taken place on Austrian soil, directly into the living rooms of the viewers across the world. An anticipated winning time of one hour and 15 minutes lends itself to an attractive television format. Furthermore, amateur triathletes will have the possibility of competing on the same course as their professional heroes. Register now!

Voices to the new course of the World Championship competition in Kitzbuehel:

Walter Zettinig, president of the ÖTRV:
“As a consequence of the new format, taking the triathlon to the “Alpenhaus” on the Kitzbuehl Horn, people will watch the race as excitedly as never before. We are proud of setting a milestone with this exceptional event, not only in the Olympic Triathlon Series, but also in the international triathlon sport.”
Julius Skamen, president of the Tyrolean Triathlon Association:
“The Tyrol thereby shows once again new markets to the international world of triathlon. The triathlon course up to the Kitzbuehel Horn sets a new milestone like the “Mountainmann” in Seefeld in the 90s did. The Tyrolean Triathlon Association is looking forward to a spectacular, superlative event in July 2013.”
Herwig Grabner, Race Director:
“We have taken the idea of many visionaries seriously and consequently put a project together. We are proud of implementing the probably most spectacular triathlon in the history of the World Championship Series in Kitzbühel. We are at the beginning of our project and are looking forward to a unique possibility to change the format of triathlon.”
