The Tour of Austria

The spectacular mountain stage of the Tour of Austria

Kitzbühel and its local mountain, the Kitzbüheler Horn, have now been a stage finish for the biggest cycling event in Austria an impressive total of 20 times. In the 71st Tour of Austria, the town even enjoyed the honour of being the start and finish location of the all-important final stage. After setting off in the town centre, the winner of the 2019 event faced a total of 116 challenging kilometres and a difference in altitude of 2,215 metres before reaching the finish line on the Kitzbüheler Horn at an altitude of 1,670 metres above sea level. The steepest incline in this demanding stage on Kitzbühel’s local mountain is a tough 23 percent. The Tour of Austria will pay Kitzbühel a visit again from the 2nd to 3rd of july 2020.

On Friday, 3rd July, the town also hosts the Kitzbüheler Horn Bike Attack event for amateur cyclists before the professionals take to the road. The trip up the mountain on Kitzbühel’s Hornbahn gondola is free of charge for all guests and visitors on this day.

The Horn Stage

In 2018, the Horn Stage was selected as one of the ten Great Rides in Tirol. The panoramic road leading up the Kitzbüheler Horn is the steepest road for cyclists in Austria and is considered to be one of the classic challenges on the international cycling scene. In order to conquer this steep alpine road, cyclists must overcome a constant incline of 10 to 22 percent and around 900 vertical metres over a distance of just 10 kilometres stretching from the valley up to the Alpenhaus restaurant. The route is also an interesting challenge for mountain bikers, who can even choose to tackle an additional 320 vertical metres from the Alpenhaus up to the summit.

Insider tip: a permanent timekeeping system allows amateur athletes to track how quickly they can cycle up to the Alpenhaus for free.
