Krampus Procession

Dec 5, 2013 :: An annual highlight on 5 December is the traditional Krampus Run in the center of Kitzbuehel. At 17:00 hr St. Nicholas comes into the city and distributes little gifts to all the children. After this traditional event the Krampus( Devils) follow spreading mischief everywhere. Beware! With a total of 200 shock figures running amok, the city is transformed into a suburb of hell. With stunning and oft frightening sounds, together with "diabolical" fire shows provide an unforgettable atmosphere. The "Oipenpass"(a Devil Club) organizes the spectacle and starts at 18:00 clock in the city centre.

Krampus processions are in the East Alpine area an old Advent tradition and are held every year to the amazement of the spectators. All the "Krampus" Devil figures are male, wearing costumes made from sheep or goat skin with leather belts and large bells. The large and often very precious wooden masks can cost up to 3000euro, show devilish or animalistic traits. The horns of the masks are obtained from goats, sheep, goats and cows.
Krampus Clubs are formed with folkloric associations of young people and often is accompanied with a raucous crowd and embody this Advent tradition today in many guises. There are even organized competitions and awards for most beautiful, "real" or grotesque masks.
If you want to learn further details about this Advent Traditions, visit the Museum of the Krampus "Ruat` s pass "in Kitzbuehel. There you can see, among other things, handmade carved masks and horns of the past.
