The name “Chizbuhel” appeared for the first time in an official Chiemsee document in 1165. The name itself described the town’s geographical location and was a fusion of the proper nouns “chizzo” and “buhel.”

The heyday of mining in Kitzbühel began around 1450, though silver wasn’t discovered in Kitzbühel until the 16th century. The buildings’ characteristic appearance is a result of affluence. Tourists hoping to escape the summer heat first began arriving in Kitzbühel around the year 1850. Then, with the construction of the railway in 1875, the town ascended to the status of a tourist mecca. In 1893, Franz Reisch became the first person to ski the Kitzbüheler Horn. According to documents, the first ski races were held in Kitzbühel in 1894/95.

The eye-catching, multi-coloured façades of gabled houses in the over 750 year old historical town centre were proposed by famous Kitzbühel artist and painter Alfons Walde in the early 19th century. His artistic works can be admired in the Kitzbühel Museum. Meanwhile, the legacy of his architectural contributions can still be admired during a stroll through the town centre of this erstwhile mining village in the shadow of the beautiful parish church of St. Andreas. The church hill with its two striking towers is considered to be one of the key landmark’s of the district capital, which is affectionately called the “Gamsstadt.”
