St. Martin near Lofer

St. Martin, the pilgrimage church of Maria Kirchental near Lofer, is a real rarity, high up in the mountains its "Pinzgauer Dom" is worth seeing. From all across the country pilgrims come to visit the Maria Kirchental, from Salzburg,Tyrol and also Bavaria.

Between 1694 and 1701, the church was built from the plans of the most celebrated Austrian Baroque architect, Fischer von Erlach. In 2000 Maria Kirchental was declared a national monument. Next to the church you will find an excellent guest house where you can get refreshments.

Even in a small village like St. Martin near Lofer world records are written. The Lamprecht Cave is the deepest cave passage in the world. The previously explored cave system includes 52 km of the underground system. Only a very small part at the bottom of the entire cave system is available to vist, that is about 600 meters. The stairs are very well developed, based on a total of 392 steps to a depth of 65 meters.

The Vorderkaserklamm (a mountain crevice) is impressive and shows what the forces of nature can do. You can hike through this gorge with the Saalachtal Summer Card for free! Along a beautiful walking path you will come across an old mill.
