New classical music format in Kitzbühel as part of Klassik in den Alpen

09.06.2022 / Star mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča today presented a new classical music event format in the Gamsstadt together with Kitzbühel Tourism. On July 9th, the opera star will sing her annual Kitzbühel Open Air "Klassik in den Alpen", to which she will bring not only prominent "Friends" but also her "ZukunftsStimmen" - the best of her own young talent competition - increasingly into the spotlight.

As a prelude to the Open Air Saturday, young singers at the first edition of Kitzbühel Klassik will already be demonstrating their skills in front of an audience in the beautiful Stadtpark in the days leading up to the event.

Kitzbühel Klassik

As part of the Kitzbühel Klassik theme week, concerts featuring young, regional performers and the top-ranked artists in the ZukunftsStimmen competition will be offered on three evenings starting on Wednesday. With the performances at free admission in Kitzbühel's Stadtpark, one of the most attractive tourism hotspots, Kitzbühel wants to consciously dedicate itself to promoting young talent as part of its strategic realignment.

Chamber singer Elīna Garanča

"Kitzbühel always has a special atmosphere for me. The mountain scenery is always impressive for me as someone who grew up in the Latvian lowlands. This year we have expanded the Klassik offer together with Kitzbühel Tourism, which makes me very happy! An exciting event format as a station for my young singers on their way to the big stages of this world!"

Dr. Viktoria Veider-Walser, Managing Director of Kitzbühel Tourism

"Kitzbühel as a global tourist brand and Elīna Garanča as a world star form a perfect symbiosis! With 'Kitzbühel Klassik', we are adding a special facet to the classical repertoire of the Gamsstadt and not only creating a stage for the future world stars of the opera industry, but also offering low-threshold access to the cultural experience."

Hans Holzer, organizer of the Klassik Open Airs and managing director of AMI Promarketing

"Kitzbühel Klassik is not only a form of "lived" promotion of young talent and a stage for presenting oneself to the visitors of Klassik in den Alpen, but also an opportunity for our audience to get in the mood for Elīna Garanča's concert. On Wednesday, artists from the region will perform, and on Thursday, 4th and 5th place of the ZukunftsStimmen competition, 2nd and 3rd place can then be seen on Friday. The winner will then join Elīna on the big open air stage in Pfarrau Park on Saturday."

"Pure magic" - Elīna Garanča at "Klassik in den Alpen"

An impressive mountain panorama as a backdrop for highlights of the opera repertoire, Zarzuella excerpts and internationally known songs and duets: this is what the audience can expect this year when mezzo-soprano star Elīna Garanča comes to Kitzbühel for Klassik in den Alpen. "With a view of mountains such as the Hahnenkamm and the Kitzbühel Horn, the audience can enjoy arias from operas such as "Luisa Fernanda" and "Rigoletto" and examples of the light muse," says Elīna Garanča.

Musical director Karel Mark Chichon has placed the program, which includes compositions by Giuseppe Verdi, Gaetano Donizetti, Vincenzo Bellini, Leonard Bernstein and others, under the motto "Longing." Arias from "Norma", "Linda di Chamounix" and "Madama Butterfly" will be heard under the starry sky of Kitzbühel, as well as Zarzuella and musical excerpts.

The flair of South America

The popular medley at the end of the concert is dedicated this time to compositions with South American color. Among the encores, which remain secret, will also be a piece related to the Tyrolean venue.

Elīna Garanča is getting support from her "Friends," Marina Monzó and Jonathan Tetelman. Both have recently made a frequent name for themselves, Tetelman for example as Cavaradossi in "Tosca" at the Theater an der Wien, Marina Monzó as the Queen of the Night in "Die Zauberflöte" at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, as Donna Anna in "Don Giovanni" at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff and as Contessa di Folleville in "Il Viaggio a Reims" at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.

In addition, up-and-coming soprano Marie-Sophie Janke, winner of the ZukunftsStimmen initiative and of whose talent Elīna Garanča is convinced, will perform the aria of Rosina from "Il Barbiere di Siviglia." The musical carpet will be formed by the musicians of the Symphony Orchestra of the Volksoper Wien and conductor Karel Mark Chichon. And to ensure that the audience also receives background information on the pieces sung by Garanča, Tetelman, Monzó and Janke, ORF Kulturlady Barbara Rett will be on board as host in the tried and tested manner.

Once again, then, mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča, who is at home on the world's great stages, performs on an extraordinary open-air stage whose atmosphere she describes as "pure magic." Not least to allow herself and the audience to indulge their own personal longing for a peaceful evening marked by cultural enjoyment.
