Courts that have witnessed legends

The first tennis tournament to take place in Kitzbühel was held 117 years ago, back in 1904. A tournament scoreboard from that series dating back to the year 1912 can still be found in the town today. The first “Alpenländerpokal” (Alpine Countries Cup) tournament took place 41 years later and marked the start of the long history of the ATP tournament. A multitude of legends have been putting their tennis talent to the test in Kitzbühel ever since. Thomas Muster (Austria’s only champion), Arthur Ashe, Ivan Lendl, Boris Becker, Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanišević and Dominic Thiem are just a small selection of the sand-court heroes who have battled it out in impressive matches on Centre Court.

Kitzbühel Tennis Club (KTC) is home to a total of ten courts, including three indoor courts that offer visitors the chance to serve an ace on legendary ground throughout the year.

The tournament itself takes place every year between July and August and has been increasing in popularity ever since 2011, partly thanks to the success of Dominic Thiem in 2019. In 2018, the matches were visited by around 50,000 fans.

A particularly big fan of the “Generali Open” is Philipp Kohlschreiber, who was born in the German city of Augsburg but now resides in Kitzbühel. He won the tournament in his new home town in 2015 and 2017.
